Luzern Concours Hippique poster June 1950 | Vintage Equestrian Wall Art | Hugentobler This Luzern Concours Hippique poster was originally created by the Swiss artist Iwan Edvin Hugentobler to advertise the 1933 International Horse Show at Lucerne in Switzerland. The classic equestrian poster was considered so good that it was reissued with changes to information and dates to promote the event up until 1964. Several language versions were also produced. Hugentobler’s Lucerne Horse Show poster depicts an elegant, traditionally dressed equestrian rider wearing his traditional show jumping competition attire which is steeped in tradition and historical significance. The rider’s “pink” dress coat with gold hunt buttons is believed to derive from the scarlet tunics worn by the British Army in the 18th century. The jackets were then adopted by the landed gentry during fox hunts so that staff and riders could easily be seen in the country. Today the red coat usually denotes that the rider has represented their country in a Nations Cup or other international competition. The rider’s outfit is completed with a white dress shirt with a white cravat and a black silk riding hat. The equestrian is standing confidently in front of his two magnificent thoroughbred horses. He glances back as he admires their beauty and strength. The majestic creatures tower over him, their muscular bodies rippling under their shiny coats. The first horse, is a stunning chestnut brown colour, with a lustrous mane and tail. His eyes gleam with intelligence, and his powerful legs seem poised to leap into action at any moment. The second horse is an equally impressive black stallion, with a sleek coat that shines like polished obsidian. His regal bearing and graceful movements speak to his exceptional breeding and training. Both horses are adorned with ribbons on their headbands, a testament to their impressive performance in the recent competition. As the rider stands before his beloved horses, he feels a deep sense of gratitude and respect for these magnificent equine beasts. He knows that their success is a reflection of their hard work and dedication, as well as his own. And as he looks at them he feels a sense of kinship and partnership that is truly indescribable. Lucerne had a long tradition of equestrian sports, and hosted and co-hosted the International Horse Show, an equestrian show jumping event featuring Dressage, Show Jumping and Eventing, until 2006. The event is now held annually in St Gallen. Iwan Edwin Hugentobler poster artist Iwan Edwin Hugentobler was a visionary artist whose passion for painting was as boundless as his creativity.
