Arosa Pferderennen poster 1938 | Vintage Horse Racing Wall Art | Hugo Laubi The Arosa horse races were a highly anticipated annual event in Switzerland in the 1930s. The races took place in the picturesque town of Arosa, located in the Swiss Alps, and attracted both local and international spectators. This Arosa Pferderennen poster was created for the 1938 meeting. The event featured a range of different races, including flat races, steeplechases, and trotting races, and drew some of the top horses and jockeys from around the world. One of the most notable aspects of the Arosa horse races was the stunning natural setting in which they took place. Today, Arosa is best known for its beautiful scenery and outdoor activities, particularly winter sports. Located in the Swiss Alps, the town offers breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains, glaciers, and pristine lakes. The Arosa horse race was a famous event, popular with both local people and foreign high society. During the 1930s, the Arosa horse races were a highly anticipated annual event in Switzerland. The races took place in the picturesque town and attracted both local and international spectators. The event featured a range of different races, including flat races, steeplechases, and trotting races, and drew some of the top horses and jockeys from around the world. As this stunning Arosa Pferderennen poster explains the horse races were usually held in the middle of February. The Arosa horse races were not just a sporting event, but also a social occasion, with attendees dressing up in their finest attire and enjoying a range of different entertainment options, including live music and dancing. The event became a popular gathering place for the wealthy and elite of Swiss society, who would come from far and wide to participate in the festivities. Laubi’s 1938 Arosa horse racing poster depicts two steeplechase jockeys racing neck and neck as they take the three-bar fence on the Arosa racetrack. The colourful silks worn by the riders have been carefully and cleverly chosen. The generic red, white and blue of the furthest rider suggest he could be racing for France, Great Britain, the USA, the Netherlands, Russia, Australia or many other countries. However, the dominating red and white silks of the nearest jockey, proudly display the red and white of the Swiss national flag. In a hand-lettered cursive text, the poster shouts Arosa. The name of the region is supported by smaller text that reads Pferderennen 10. u. 13. Febr. 1938. Flach-Hürden-Trab, Militär u Gästerennen. The text translates to “Arosa Horse Races – 10th and 13th February 1938 – Flat, Hurdles, Trot, Military, and Guest races. The artwork was popular enough to be reused for posters advertising the Arosa horse races from 1938 to 1942. Other Hugo Laubi horse racing posters Hugo Laubi was born in Zurich in 1888, where he worked as a draftsman, painter and graphic artist, and died in 1959. He gained popularity in the 1930s as a Swiss poster artist who gained an enviable reputation for his vintage travel posters for Swiss holiday and ski resorts including St Moritz, Klosters, Arosa and Weggis. He also produced many commercial advertising posters for companies including Beurer, Cafe Odeon, PKZ, Cornetto and Bally. However, it is his extraordinary artistic skill at painting his equine racehorses that he is probably best known for. Hugo Laubi developed a strong fascination for horses at a young age and frequently depicted these majestic creatures. He had the opportunity to work with riders during his military service and created several artworks featuring horses in military scenes, horse races, and other recurring themes. Some of our favourite Hugo Laubi horse racing posters include his 1925  St Moritz Jubiläums-Rennwoche poster, the 1933 St Moritz XXII Grosse Internationale Pferderennen poster and the 1952 St Moritz horse racing poster. Laubi’s equine posters were known for their bold and striking designs. They are often characterised by their attention to detail, particularly in the depiction of horses in action. The artist had a remarkable ability to capture the fluid movement and power of these majestic animals, making his posters truly stand out from those of many of his contemporaries. Laubi became an important and influential figure in the world of Swiss poster art in the 1930s. His bold and innovative designs helped to redefine the genre and set new standards for advertising design. Today, his posters are highly collectable and continue to inspire contemporary graphic designers.
